COVID-19 Outbreak – Impact on E-Learning Sector

Amid the pandemic COVID-19, many sectors are struggling to make ends meet. One such is the education sector, which has suffered considerable damage across the world. E-learning turned out to be a numero uno solution in solving the issue considerably. Computer-assisted education is crushing the obstacle between education and bright future of the next generation with the help of self-contained computer programs, 3D content, and educational video games, which can be played on both large display TV & smartphones. Though there is an uneven presence of broadband, 4G, or 5G internet connection at some places, the plug-n-play system is used for serving the purpose.

The majority of the world is under lockdown, and people are restricted from traveling and attending schools & colleges. This has resulted in the bigger buzz around a few topics like hand sanitizer, vaccination, masks, work from home, and also online education/ e-learning/ remote learning/distance learning. In order to curb the spreading of COVID-19, education of nearly 1.6 billion children & youth is disrupted. To this effect, many of the top universities in North America, Europe, and Asia have shifted their classes to online platforms. Many of them have initiated to conduct the entire semester and are also planning to conduct next semester online to oblige government regulations and minimize the pandemic effect on students’ & teachers’ health. This will also help in mitigating loss in potential human capital as well as attenuation in economic opportunities in the long term.

As per the World Bank, a comprehensive plan should be designed to implement remote learning quickly & efficiently. This includes developing a short term and long term remote learning plan, creating an inventory of existing content & thorough planning to add unique content in the near future. Also, organize content with the existing curriculum, creating a virtual help desk for the teachers, display content through various devices, using educational TV channels and others. Various institutions and companies are stepping ahead to help teachers via webinars in getting acquainted with teaching online.

Technologies like learning management systems, cloud storage, cloud identity & access management and cloud collaboration can be harnessed extensively to get best & efficient results of the e-learning initiative. Though this is not the best way of imparting education, improvements are anticipated in the future due to technological advancements like augmented reality and interactive video games, making distant learning more engaging & entertaining.

Thus, the present unprecedented situation has made it imperative for policymakers and concerned authorities to bring about crucial changes in the education system around the globe. These changes, though, are adopted for a short term cause, will change the course of impartation of education in the long term.
